Pasifika Culture Makes Waves with Landmark Exhibition: “Wansolmoana”. A new Sydney gallery, devoted to a vast collection of Pacific art, offers diverse cultural perspectives within its walls Titled “Wansolmoana,” which translates to “One Salt Ocean,” this gallery at the Australian Museum takes visitors on a journey through the cultural histories and art of Pasifika people.”

The gallery shares Pacific diaspora stories, offering a unique multicultural perspective in Australia. As curator Melissa Malu wisely said, “You find what you seek if you focus on it.”


“Wansolmoana” features a diverse range of objects, from a 2014 climate blockade canoe to traditional headdresses and ceremonial outfits.

This five-year exhibition, generously supported by the Macdoch Foundation, explores the complex history of Pacific Islanders in Australia. It explores issues like slavery, colonization, and climate change from the unique perspective of the Pasifika people.

Kim McKay, the Australian Museum’s director and chief executive, hopes “Wansolmoana” offers audiences a chance to experience Pacific cultural diversity. Furthermore, the gallery features both historical artifacts and contemporary artworks, providing a holistic representation of Pasifika culture.
