Elaine George: Pioneering Aboriginal Model and Advocate Shines at Brisbane Fashion Festival

Elaine George, the iconic Arakwal woman from Bundjalung Nation, made history as the first Aboriginal woman to grace the cover of Vogue Australia in 1993. With nearly 30 years in the fashion industry, she continues to be a trailblazer.

Balancing her modelling career with advocacy for First Nation creatives, she appreciates the industry’s move towards inclusivity and diversity. Still committed to her work in child protection, she serves as a cultural practice lead, helping children in out-of-home care connect with their family and community. Elaine returned to the runway at Brisbane Fashion Festival, showcasing her support for local designers and First Nations brands.

To aspiring young creatives, she advises respecting the past, embracing the present, and making a future for themselves, acknowledging the sacrifices of those who came before. Elaine George, also known as “Aunty Vogue,” continues to break barriers and inspire the next generation of Indigenous models and creatives.
